Italy
www.dibris.unige.it/en/chessa-manuela

Brief Bio
Manuela Chessa is a Assistant Professor at Dept. of Informatics, Bioengineering, Robotics, and Systems Engineering of University of Genova, Italy. She received her MSc in 2005, and the Ph.D. in 2009, under the supervision of Prof. S. P. Sabatini. Her research interests are focused on the study of biological and artificial vision systems, on the development of bioinspired models, and of natural human-machine interfaces based on virtual, augmented and mixed reality. She studies the use of novel sensing technologies (e.g. Microsoft Kinect, Leap Motion, Intel Real Sense) and of visualization devices (e.g. 3D monito rs, head-mounted-displays, tablets) to develop natural interaction systems, always having in mind the human perception. She has been involved in several national and international research projects. She is author and co-author of 55 peer reviewed scientific papers, both on ISI journal and on International Conferences, of 5 book chapters, and of 2 edited book. ... More >>

Alexis Paljic
Robotics Center, Mines Paristech
France
http://caor.mines-paristech.fr/users/alexispaljic

Brief Bio
Alexis Paljic is an associate professor in the Centre for Robotics, PSL-Research University, Mines ParisTech. His research field is immersion and interaction in virtual reality. He conducts research to explore the conditions of realistic response in virtual reality in the context of predictive use of VR, such as industrial design or therapy. He also seeks to adapt immersion and interaction in the context of wide public use of VR: emerging forms of cinema, games, or cultural mediation.

Marc Ernst
Faculty for Computer Science, Engineering, and Psychology, Ulm University
Germany

Brief Bio
Since 2016 I am Chair of the Applied Cognitive Psychology Group at Ulm University, and currently vice-dean of the faculty and head of the Department for Psychology and Education which consists of 16 mayor research groups. Between 2011 and 2016 I was at Bielefeld University where I was Chair of the Cognitive Neuroscience Department, Director of the Interdisciplinary Research Centre (ZiF), and Vice-Coordinator of the Cognitive Interaction Technology-Centre of Excellence (CITEC). I studied Physics in Heidelberg and Frankfurt/Main. In 2000, I received my Ph.D. degree from Tübingen University for work conducted at the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics investigating human visuomotor behavior. Starting in 2000, I spent almost 2 years as postdoc at the University of California at Berkeley, USA working with Prof. M. Banks on the integration of multisensory information. End of 2001 I returned to the MPI and became principle investigator of the Sensorimotor Lab in the Department of Prof. H. Bülthoff. In 2007, I then became leader of the Max Planck Research Group on Human Multisensory Perception & Action, before I moved to Bielefeld in 2011.
My scientific interest is in human multisensory perception, sensorimotor integration, men-machine interaction, and VR. To this end, my work focuses on developing empirically grounded, computational models of human perception and behaviour in close interaction with their application to intelligent technical systems for predicting and benchmarking human performance in naturalistic, interactive environments. I have published over 100 articles, chapters, and conference proceedings. I am editor-in-chief for the journal Multisensory Research, I am editor for several journals including the Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, the Journal of Vision, the ACM Transactions on Applied Perception, and Cognitive Processing, and I am co-edior of the Springer book series on Touch and Haptic systems. I was involved in several international collaborative grants, including the EU Project Tocuh-HapSys investigating the sense of touch in interactive VR settings, the EU Project ImmerSence investigating human-human and human-machine interaction, the EU Project THE investigating synergies for haptic perception and action, the EU Project WearHap developing and testing wearable haptic devices, and a HFSP project focusing on mechanisms of associative learning in human perception. Additionally, I was coordinating the EU Project CyberWalk, which developed an omnidirectional treadmill to enable natural free walking in virtual environments. I am founding member and one of the past presidents (2010-2014) of the EuroHaptics Society. Furthermore, I am member and vice-chair of the Technical Committee in Haptics, and the Vision Science Society.
